I totally fell in love with this simple but so yummy recipe right after I made it for the very first time many years ago. I was a little reluctant at the beginning because I am not really a big dates fan. Wondering about other fruits I could have replaced the dates with, even before I tasted it, didn’t make me come to any alternative besides dried plums. But then I thought, why not give the dates a chance first? And I’m so glad that I did, or I would have missed these flavors that blend so perfectly together.
I remember how I introduced a friend and former colleague of mine to this dessert at work. She loved it!! From that day on we made sure to sweeten our lunch break with this cream on a regular basis. We prepared the orange juice in advance, so all we needed to do at work was to add the yoghurt and the pistachios. That really made our day!
Actually yesterday when I prepared this after having it eaten for a long time, I prepared the glasses and I stored them in the fridge for the first time. When I took them out today, they tasted as good as yesterday, if not even a little better. So if you have guests coming over and want to prepare it ahead, you should go for it. Make sure to cover the glasses with some plastic wrap.
300ml / 10fl oz of orange juice (freshly squeezed or bottled)
100g / 3½oz of dried dates
a pinch of cinnamon
400g / 14oz of plain (unsweetened) greek yoghurt
2 full tbsp of chopped pistachios (fresh or roasted)

Mix the orange juice with the chopped dates and cinnamon in a pot and bring to a boil on medium heat for approx. 5min. After cooling off completely, you can either leave it in the fridge for 1 or 2 hours, time permitting (this will make the mix less liquid), or you go ahead and fill the glasses. Add the unsweetened yoghurt on top and sprinkle with the chopped pistachios.
A little side note: As the orange juice-dates mix will turn out very sweet after boiling, you don’t need any additional sugar in your yoghurt. In order to get the best taste out of it, just make sure to get with your spoon the cinnamon mix as well as some yoghurt.
